What is clinical hypnosis?

What comes to mind when you hear the words "hypnosis" or "trance"? Some of those images may be quite humorous.

The American Society for Clinical Hypnosis defines hypnosis as

"a state of consciousness involving focused attention and reduced peripheral awareness characterized by an enhanced capacity for response to suggestion."

Trance is a part of the process of hypnosis; I like to describe it as a deep state of focused attention. We all experience trance states naturally from time to time; have you ever been so immersed in something that you lost all track of time and even your surroundings? When you work with a trained hypnotherapist to elicit trance, that person serves only as a guide to help you achieve this state of focused attention yourself. You are always in control. While in a trance state, you may discover that your mind will quiet its judgmental, critical thinking and become more open and receptive to suggestions. We use suggestions specifically designed to help you access your own inner resources so that you can start making the changes you want for yourself.

Hypnosis is not for everyone. And some people who want to try hypnosis find that they have difficulty entering trance. Regardless of your "hypnotizability" I will be glad to help you find ways to access your own inner resources. I hope you will take the opportunity to learn more about hypnosis and what it might have to offer. Please feel free to schedule a consultation with me to learn more.
